Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Cuba early Wednesday, a day after hitting Jamaica as one of the most powerful Atlantic storms on record.
The hurricane came ashore in the Cuban province of Santiago de Cuba with maximum sustained winds of close to 120 miles an hour, according to the National Hurricane Center. Meteorologists said it was bringing damaging winds, dangerous storm surge and flooding rains as it moved over the eastern part of the island. They expect it to cause “life-threatening and potentially catastrophic” flash flooding and several landslides.
Hurricane warnings were in place for several provinces of the island nation.
Melissa slowed to a Category 3 storm overnight after making landfall in southwestern Jamaica early Tuesday as a Category 5 storm with winds of 185 miles an hour. Jamaican officials said the storm has trapped families in homes, damaged hospitals and cut power for three-quarters of the island. Forecasters urged residents to stay in their homes, calling the storm “an extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation.”
Jamaica’s government reported at least three storm-related deaths Monday, before the hurricane’s direct hit on the island.
The hurricane started battering the island with flooding, heavy rain and powerful winds before its eye came ashore in the afternoon. Forecasters expect that parts of Jamaica, an island of 2.8 million people, could be uninhabitable for weeks or months.
Jamaican officials said nearly 15,000 people were in shelters. Almost every region had flooding, blocked roads and downed trees and power lines, Desmond McKenzie, the island’s minister of local government and community development, said at a news briefing Tuesday afternoon. At one hospital, 75 patients had to be evacuated.
“The entire Jamaica has felt the brunt of Melissa,” McKenzie said.
McKenzie said a southwestern region, St. Elizabeth Parish, was underwater. “St. Elizabeth is the breadbasket of the country and that has taken a beating,” he said.
Novette Holness, a 45-year-old nursing aide from Florida, was visiting her family near where the storm made landfall on Jamaica’s southwestern coast. She said Tuesday that she was sheltering in a home where she could hear the wind whistling. A nearby school was flooded and she could see downed trees outside.
“It’s very cloudy, very windy,” she said.
Holness said she hasn’t heard from most of her family members on the island because they don’t have electricity.
The government ordered several coastal areas to evacuate ahead of the storm. Forecasters expect that parts of Jamaica could be uninhabitable for weeks or months.
As of early Wednesday, Jamaica had been downgraded to a tropical storm warning, though forecasters warned that the island would continue to experience catastrophic flash flooding and numerous landslides through Wednesday morning.
Melissa is expected to move across the Bahamas later Wednesday as a powerful hurricane; hurricane warnings are in place. Melissa is then expected to pass near Bermuda, which has been put on hurricane watch, on Thursday night as it continues to move northeast.
The U.S. evacuated more than 1,000 people from Guantanamo Bay, a U.S. Navy base, ahead of Melissa’s expected arrival in Cuba. Forecasters said flash flooding and landslides will hit parts of Haiti and the Dominican Republic through the middle of the week. Forecasters said tropical storm conditions were expected in Haiti Wednesday.
